Matt Bird Practice Behaviour PhD
Matt Bird behaves as a bowerbird, constructing woven anachronistic architectural worlds in a strangely familiar way to his avian friends. He gathers urban materials and reimagines them into alluring spatial and immersive experiences via a precise articulation of intuitive pecks, wefts and warps.
He constructs seductive architectural ‘states of minds’, enticing clients and audiences to travel across multiple thresholds of stagey and evocative ‘where I’d rather be’ environments… Ultimately transporting the user from the banal of the everyday into the inner realm of shimmer, desire and otherworldliness.
Completed projects are realised on a beer budget with low-cost or recycled materials, and physically handcrafted by the Architect and a team of collaborators… However champagne spaces materialize. Concepts are generated through client discussion, extensive trigger image & word research, sketching, iterative pattern & form developments and numerous material experiments.
(Matt Bird is a PhD architecture candidate within Professor Leon van Schaik’s practice-based programme by invitation candidature at RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia).
